«I always feel that Lisbon is like a louche aristocrat fallen on hard times, but unable quite to admit it. Dressing up in baroque facades and modernist bridges across the wide Tejo estuary, the residential areas reveal peeling buildings where the balconies are festooned with laundry and the window-frames are chiped. It's the most cosmopolitan and atmospheric of cities, a place that is always surprising.»
